Winter Break and 2010 Parnassus Awards Round-up

Tons of snow on the ground and an empty NECC campus means that Parnassus is ready to get to sleep until the end of January in the new year. As always, despite our fantastic haul of submissions this past fall, we'll definitely be in need of more great work from the NECC populace, so we hope you all will be hard at work during the break, writing and creating some fantastic stuff to submit for our 2011 edition. We'll have our usual spring submission drive, usually with a deadline near Spring Break; we'll have more crazy posters up with the details soon after the semester begins. We will also have another call for new staff members at the start of the semester, so if you've been interested in joining up, please do come and check it out - the spring semester is the big one where we get everything in motion for publishing.

The final few copies of the multi-award winning 2010 issue will be put out at the start of the spring semester, so if you haven't yet gotten one, this will be your final chance to snag yours! When we're out, you're out of luck, so get one if you see one - they'll move really fast.

Finally, we just got news that the 2010 Parnassus was honored for the third consecutive year with top honors from the national American Scholastic Press Association awards, winning First Place as well as Best Page Design. This has been a great year for Parnassus and awards, and we couldn't be happier about it all. Again, congratulations to everyone involved with this great issue. 2010 has been a great year for Parnassus, and we want to keep the ball rolling in 2011, but we need your help - get those submissions together for the spring! We hope you all have a great break, and we look forward to seeing you and your work soon!

2010 Parnassus Announced as Finalist for the CSPA Collegiate Crown Awards!

The 2010 issue of Parnassus has just been announced as a finalist in the very prestigious Columbia Scholastic Press Association's Collegiate Crown Awards! This is a very high honor that puts Parnassus in the top fifteen literary magazines in the nation for all colleges. The top contenders for this year's Gold and Silver crowns is quite a talented group, and we're very glad to be included amongst them all.

The CSPA will announce in March the final award placements, and we'll be sure to post the results here once we know all of the details. A huge congratulations to everyone who was involved with this fantastic issue!

Fall 2010 Parnassus Submission Drive News

Many thanks to everyone who submitted their writing and art/photography this fall for our biannual submission drive. We received, as always, a great amount of fantastic work from some very talented NECC students. Our staff met recently, and we made our selections for publication in the upcoming 2011 edition of Parnassus. Those who were accepted will be contacted before finals are over, and a big congratulations to all of those who were picked!

If you submitted any work that was not accepted, we encourage you to please try again in the spring, when we'll hold our second submission deadline for publication in the 2011 issue, which will be printed in May. We wish you all the best of luck, and we hope you all have a great winter break! Thanks!

2010 Parnassus Announced as First Place Winner in the Eastern Division in the CCHA Awards!

The 2010 issue of Parnassus has just been announced as the First Place winner of the Eastern Division of the Community College Humanities Association in their prestigious and highly competitive annual national literary magazine awards competition. This is the third consecutive year that Parnassus has won an award from the CCHA, and our first back-to-back win as First Place in the Eastern Division, as our 2009 edition also won First Place in the Eastern Division last year. To be honored twice in a row is something we appreciate very much, and we thank all of those at the CCHA once again for this amazing award. Huge congrats to all involved with the 2010 Parnassus - this award is yours, too!

Additional extended congratulations to Spindrift Art and Literary Journal from Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, WA, which took First Place in the Nation in the CCHA awards (also for the second consecutive year!). Congrats also to all the other lit mags that placed this year as well.

Fall Semester - The Return of Parnassus!

Welcome back to NECC, everyone! We hope you had a fantastic summer and that you're ready to get back to work. Parnassus is right there with you, and we're gearing up to start work on our 2011 issue. This is where you, the abiding and willing student of many talents comes in - we're sending out our twice-yearly call for new staff members! Joining Parnassus is a ton of fun, and the commitment is very low - we meet about five times or so over the semester to go over ideas for the book, fundraising, layout and design ideas, and, of course, to dig into and choose from the many submissions we receive each semester for consideration of publishing in our fancy little book. We hope you'll come by for our first meeting to check it all out:
Wednesday, September 22nd, 12-1 pm, C314F Conference Room
If you'd like more information, please email faculty advisor Patrick Lochelt: plochelt@necc.mass.edu.
Thanks! We hope to see you there!

The 2010 Parnassus Has Officially Arrived!

The 2010 Parnassus has finally arrived on campus! Copies can be found in several spots around school, but most predominately in our usual green (now even more green) stand in the C building lobby in the Haverhill campus. Please go by and take a copy for yourself (and grandma, too!) We're extra proud of this issue, which features our Guest Artist, Professor Marc Mannheimer, as well as our special section featuring work from the NECC Poets group. And of course all the usual amazing work from NECC students, which is exploding from the pages in full color. It's our most visually exciting issue yet, and we think the best one in our 45 years thus far.

There is also a bunch of free "limited edition" Parnassus bookmarks on the stand, featuring the names of all of our accepted contributors to this year's issue. Grab one while they last!

Check it out, and please let us know what you think! Enjoy, and have a great break!

Winter Break, 2010

Winter Break News

Winter has fallen upon New England, and Parnassus has gone into temporary hibernation. Our fall submissions process went well; we've contacted all of those who were accepted. Despite the great submissions in the fall, we will definitely be in need of many more submissions in the spring to make the 2010 edition the best it can be. Keep an eye around campus and here online for information on our upcoming spring submission drive.

The last batch of the multi-award winning 2009 edition will be put out in the C building at the start of the spring semester on the week of January 25th. If you haven't gotten one yet, grab one as soon as you can, because they move quickly, and once they're gone, they're gone!

Good luck to you all for a great spring semester, and we look forward to your submissions in March!
